Through the years as a professional woodworker I’ve spoken with many aspiring woodworkers interested in making a living by building custom furniture. As someone who has climbed the mountain, here is my unvarnished advice about building custom furniture as a sole vocation. 

Woodworking has remained largely untouched by AI, at least for now. However this probably won’t be the case for long. Here are three of my predictions as well as three predictions from ChatGPT as to how AI is going to affect woodworking in the future.

In woodworking, it can be difficult to know when you’ve “made it”. It is not necessarily enough for the woodworker to just be profitable, they also want to do work that contributes to discussions around design and is recognized as quality.
